Course Description

• What is Manga?
→ a basic understanding of how to read manga, manga readerships, manga genres, manga publishers, and manga age ratings.

• Why Manga?
→ a basic understanding of why manga is important for patrons, for entertainment, for visual and textual literacy, for social-emotional development, and for building cultural literacy.

• Manga Collection Development
→ a basic understanding of manga collection development, resources to use, shelving and displays, reader’s advisory, and digital content.

• Manga in Libraries
→ an introduction to the Manga in Libraries resources, webinars, book lists, and more!

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will…

1. Build their knowledge and competence for understanding and collecting manga, acquiring the tools to build robust and diverse manga collections.
2. Become manga reader’s advisory experts, understanding the value of, as well as, how to get “just right” manga into the hands of their patrons.

Speaker:

Jillian Rudes is the school librarian at a 6th-12th grade, public school in New York City. She is the Japanese Culture & Manga Librarian for the New York City Department of Education, as well as, the founder and host of the international webinar series Manga in Libraries. In 2022, she received the American Library Association's Scholastic Library Publishing Award and was selected as a Library Journal Mover & Shaker.
