Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this on-demand webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what neurodiversity is and common challenges neurodiverse adults face;
  • Know the tools to aid in having the library be a welcoming space for neurodiverse adults; and
  • Have a framework for starting a neurodiverse meetup group at their library, whether they are neurodiverse themselves or not.

This on-demand webinar is intended for any public library worker wishing to sample the educational offerings of the PLA 2026 Virtual Conference.

Panelists

Amy Henkels is a Reference Librarian at the Ela Area Public Library with over 15 years of experience helping patrons navigate information, technology, and community resources. As an AuDHD individual (Autistic and ADHD), Amy brings both personal insight and professional dedication to advocating for neurodiverse inclusion in libraries and beyond. In addition to coordinating and teaching technology programs for a wide range of skill levels, Amy shares expertise with other libraries and organizations on how to better understand and support neurodivergent adults. Their trainings emphasize practical, empathetic approaches to communication, program design, and accessibility. Amy also leads a growing monthly Neurodiverse Meetup Group, creating a safe, supportive space for neurodivergent adults to connect, share, and thrive. Through this work, they champion inclusive practices that celebrate the strengths and address the challenges of neurodiverse individuals. Whether designing technology workshops, advising on accessibility, or building community, Amy is passionate about creating environments where everyone feels seen, respected, and empowered.
